| | We recommend dental exams and cleanings annually, starting at one year of age for cats and small-breed dogs and at two years of age for large-breed dogs.
In the dental exam, we look for developmental anomalies, oral tumors, periodontal disease and accumulation of plaque and tartar. Dental radiographs (x-rays) are sometimes needed to detect abnormalities or hidden infections that cannot be seen by examination alone. X-rays can also confirm the need for surgery, including extraction of loose or badly infected teeth. At NorthPointe, we use the latest digital x-rays, which eliminates need for processing time and permits faster, more accurate evaluation.

| | We can perform a basic oral examination on patients that are awake. However, for thorough examinations and for dental cleanings, a short-lasting anesthetic is needed. Our state-of-the-art dental equipment, including digital radiography, speeds up the time required for dental procedures, so the patient spends less time under anesthesia. | | Rabbits and Rats
Rabbits' and rats' teeth continually grow and can cause various dental problems for your pets. Sometimes the teeth don't line up (malocclusion) and grow too long, making it difficult for the pet to eat. Sometimes the teeth grow into the skin and cause pain. Please bring your pocket pets to us for regular checkups and teeth trimmings as needed.
Reptiles
Reptiles, especially snakes and lizards, can get mouth abscesses which can interfere with their eating. You should bring any reptile with mouth problems to us right away, as your pet may be suffering from underlying diseases, as well as mouth problems. | |
